Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Summer 2018

This summer I taught and coached in a summer enrichment camp for middle school youth in rural Vietnam for a three-week immersive service/leadership program through Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement Program (ACE Program). This program takes Duke-Stanford student-athletes and places them in one of four international service programs. In Vietnam, I coached volleyball and taught math and life skills sessions which emphasized topics such as goal-setting, perseverance, teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership. It was a great program and I learned how as athletes, we can inspire others through the power of play. My grandfather served in the US Army Medical Corps and was stationed in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War. Coaching and teaching in this very same hot and humid region and seeing Vietnam 50 years after the war was a remarkable experience.
